Whose Goal Is It Anyway?

When we think about goals, most of us can reel off a list without much effort. Earn more, be healthier, find love, get promoted, declutter the house, finally learn Spanish. But how often do we pause long enough to ask where these goals actually come from?

Here is the thing. We are not always conscious of the influences shaping our ambitions. Family expectations, cultural ideas about success, childhood experiences of lack or insecurity, even social media quietly whispering, you should want this. It is no wonder that some goals feel suspiciously heavy. They will if they are borrowed, inherited or absorbed, rather than chosen.

In therapy, this becomes a gentle area of exploration. To work to understand your goals and the drivers behind them. Together we look voices behind the desire, and emotions keeping it in place, and whether it truly belongs to the present you, or an old version of you still seeking approval or safety or something else.

When a goal is genuinely your own, it might feel lighter, calmer, less pressured. More like an invitation or an excitement than an obligation.

🌼 You are allowed to want what you want.
